I'm Struggling...

I'm having a serious internal dilemma! I have already set my mind on basing my film around vampires. However, I am unsure of what genre to approach it from. I am deciding between comedy or straight up horror. It can really go either way as I have seen a ton of horror films about vampires and comedy films about vampires. So, to solve my problem, I started to research both genres, and here's what I have collected...

  First up is the Horror genre. Through my research I have found that in order to classify a film as a Horror film, the film must strike fear into the audience. The most common ways to do this is by visuals. Most of the time, a main antagonist in a scary movie is a supernatural creature or a masked man. What do all of these characters have in common? Their appearance can be seen as frightening to a viewer. Whether it is the lighting or the very good SFX makeup, the visuals can shift a viewers perception of a scene. For example, in Nosferatu, a 2024 film, the monster is mainly seen in dark lighting. Along with his terrifying voice, his presence evokes a sense of discomfort and fear in the audience. Overall, one thing all horror films have in common is disturbing visuals.

 Our second stop is the comedy genre! I did a little digging on the genre but, to no one's surprise, the emphasis on humor throughout a film literally makes up the whole category. From dark humor to corny jokes, any type of comedy movie can be born. Take the movie, Renfield, for example. The whole film is based around being satire. The main character, R.M. Renfield, has to eat insects to gain his supernatural powers. Also, spoiler warning, he joins a rehabilitation group to vent about Dracula being his boss! Yes, some of the visuals can definitely be looked at as disturbing, but, in its entirety, the movie is just made to make people laugh.

I am still deciding between how I want to approach this film, but as I further discuss with Juliana, we will come to a decision!

By the way, did you notice that the movies I discussed both had vampires?!😂🧛
